The owners of this home in Burnaby, British Columbia, wanted a home that could have functional and durable substances that may grow with their family, but still have a complex style. “They wanted to build their’forever home’,” says interior designer Victoria Mckenney of Enviable Designs. “The customers want to increase their children in the exact same home as they grow. This home was designed in a means that could make this possible.”

Most of the main rooms in the home are long and shallow. This odd shape made putting the furniture a challenge — especially in the kitchen. Mckenney broke this up distance by putting a casual eating area at the close of the kitchen.

The bright and warm kitchen is Mckenney’s favourite room in the home. “It’s a space that is light, but also has a joy,” she states. “The different substances we used give it depth.”

A set of Nana doors divides the casual distance from the formal dining area. These doors have been custom made with a leaded pattern also found in the dining room’s millwork.

The doors not just fold off, but also have the ability to slip at a flush-mounted track, which allows for as much or as little separation as the customers want. This is the ideal setup for the formal dining area — open the doorways, and a dinner party can be twice as large!

Large windows allow natural light in most rooms, creating an open and light texture. Mckenney balanced this out using very elegant materials like marble and walnut. The dining area is a superb illustration of this equilibrium, resulting in a brand new but standard look.

The customers had previously bought a property on Capitol Hill with an wonderful view of the city. So when building this home, they wanted something like this. The home was designed so living spaces could make the most of the city perspective on the next floor, while all the bedrooms are on the main floor. The entryway was designed to usher guests up to the next floor living area.

To keep the home kid-friendly, Mckenney and her customers chose fabrics which are hardwearing and slightly darker in color (to conceal fingerprints). For contrasting pops of color, Mckenney discovered some fun tangerine pillows for the living area.

Mckenney also chose a blend of quality goods with bits which are a little less expensive. For instance, the carpeting in the living room cost less than $200. “There was simply no point in investing a ton of money at a rug that would definitely be ruined in a year,” she states.

Mckenney loved working with these customers was because they were so receptive to different ideas and color schemes. “The powder room was a bit of a tough sell at first, but it ended up looking amazing,” she states.

Detailed molding throughout the home adds a sense of architectural depth and drama. “The home nearly feels European in that sense,” states Mckenney. The master bedroom’s soft palette contrasts with the more traditional structure.

The curvy lines of the sink and the modern floral background give the master bathroom a somewhat feminine texture, which is balanced out with a slick grey countertop and crisp white cabinetry.
