First Run Features

Eames: The Architect and the Painter

Best remembered because of their iconic mid-century ceramic and plywood furniture, the husband-and-wife group of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as being among America’s most important artists of the 20th century.

Filmmakers Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey have produced the first movie dedicated to the couple after their passing. Narrated by James Franco, the movie captures the less widely known and recognized aspects of the lives and the diverse products made by the Eames Office, or the”Eamery.”

Their layout portfolio includes splints for injured army during World War II, photography, interiors, multi-media displays, films, toys and more. The movie explores and follows their private lives and sway on significant events in American life — in the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer era.

Watch a trailer of the movie, and see whether it is coming to a city near you. Pre-order an advance copy of the DVD. (Expected ship date: Dec. 1, 2011).
